74th Oscar Nominees Announced

by Ian Waldron-Mantgani, February 12, 2002

Russell Crowe got his third Best Actor nomination in a row this afternoon, when the shortlist for the 74th Academy Awards was announced. The film in which he starred, the factual emotional drama "A Beautiful Mind", picked up eight nominations including Best Picture.

Leading the pack with thirteen nominations was Peter Jackson's epic literary adaptation "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring", which dominated the technical categories and also received a Best Picture nomination. Also in the race for the top prize are "Moulin Rouge", "Gosford Park" and "In the Bedroom".

Three of the Best Picture contenders saw their directors nominated, but not Baz Luhrmann for "Moulin" or Todd Field for "Bedroom". Ridley Scott was mentioned for his depiction of contemporary warfare in "Black Hawk Down" and David Lynch for the dreamlike oddity "Mulholland Drive". In the acting categories, Marisa Tomei picked up her first nomination in nine years for "In the Bedroom", both Maggie Smith and Helen Mirren were Supporting Actress nominees for "Gosford Park", and the Best Actor race made history by nominating two black leading men in the same year -- Denzel Washington for "Training Day" and Will Smith for "Ali".

Oscar gave us a new and entirely unnecessary category this year, Best Animated Feature. With only nine eligible films in the running, the Academy should have been trusted to nominate obviously worthy choices, but the Farrelly Brothers' brilliantly inventive "Osmosis Jones" and Richard Linklater's groundbreaking "Waking Life" were both left out in the cold for "Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius" and "Monsters, Inc.", which joined front-runner "Shrek" on the list of nominees.

Today's nicest surprise was the nomination of Terry Zwigoff's quirky independent film "Ghost World" for Best Adapted Screenplay. The film deserved to be nominated for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting actress -- but considering only five prints of the film were released in the United States, we should be grateful for that one nomination.

Below is a full list of nominees. The Academy Awards will be presented on March 24.
