About

A critic with a point of view

UK Critic is an independent British film and cinema journal — honest reviews and features on British films and film-makers, the cinema-going experience, the industry behind the screen, and a watchlist of what to seek out.

We write for people who love the pictures and want a critic with a point of view, not a listings feed. The tone is opinionated, wry and — we hope — culturally literate: a film writer you'd trust in the pub, weighing a film honestly rather than parroting a press release.

What we cover

Five rooms, one house. Reviews and features weigh the films with a verdict in the prose. British Cinema traces the movements — the New Wave, the social realists, the genre traditions. The Cinema-Going Experience is about the act itself: the picture houses, the price of a ticket, who gets to sit in the dark. The Industry reads the business behind the screen. And the Watchlist is simply what to seek out.

Everything lives in the Reading Room — our filterable index of every piece. Reviews carry a light star mark; features and essays don't. We don't date our own writing: a good film is a good film whenever you find it.
